Materials Needed In Vermicomposting
🔸Plastic sheet(Vermi-bag/vermi-pit)-There should not be any hole in plastic sheet.
🔸Animal manure- It shouldn’t be too fresh. The manure should be at least (5-6) days old.
🔸Crop residues(stubbles,barn)-Along with crop residues we can use neem leafs.
🔸Soil- The field soil is best. The other impurities in soil be removed.
🔸Water:-Vermicompost contains (50-60%) moisture. As earthworm doesn’t have lungs they breathe with skin. Their skin should be kept moist.

Vermi Bag And Worm Bin
We can get readymade vermi bag in market. These are polybag. With worm bin you also gets sheet to be used as roof as earthworm needs shades.
Vermibag setup should be fixed in shadded area. These type of vermibag setup can be used for (2-3) years. The cost of vermibag is about (20-30)$.
There are holes at the base of vermibag from which water drians out. Intially the water drains out should be thrown but after 2 months of setup, drained water can also be used as liquid fertilizer.
How To Make Worm Bin
The alternative of vermi-bag is by making pits. These type of pits are made up of bricks. The things that needs to be keep in consideration while making pits are:-
1. The walls of pits should have (3-4) layers of bricks.
2.The width of pit is 1M and length should be made according to requirement.
3.The height of the pit shouldn’t be greater than 50cm because the earthworms used are surface feeding so they don’t feeds too deep.
Steps Of Vermicomposting
1.First of all, plastic sheet should be lay on ground. Or plastic sheet can be used by digging soil. Nowadays, we can buy vermi-bag in market which is very comfortable and good to make vermicompost.As explained earlier, we can also make vemicompost in vermi-pit.
2.Above plastic sheet/base of vermibag, the first layer should be of crop residues. The thickness of this layer should be (3-4) inch. Water should be sprayed above crop residues.
3.Above crop residues, we can also used the layer of neem leafs.But, we shouldn’t use too much neem leafs as they have their own saint. Very little amount of neem leafs should be used.
4.Above neem leafs, the mixture of animal manure and soil (soil+animal manure) should be used. This layer is also (3-4)inch thick.
5.Now, we use vermicast. Vermicast is the mixture of earthworm and their eggs. It is the most important layer. without this layer there will not be any vermicompost.
6.Above vermicast layer, we should use animal manure. It should be (3-4)inch thick. Again the layer should be sprayed with water.
7.Above all, final top layer should be the mixture of crop residues and neem leaf (crop residues+neem leaf).
After arranging these all layers in vermi bag, it should be kept in shade as earthworm are negatively photoblastic. Earthworm feels safe in shade and their activity is also at top level in shade.
The earthworms actively feeds on these materials and eject its cast which is vermicompost.
After these arrangement, the vermicompost gets ready after 2-3 months. Then, we should start the process of harvesting vermicompost.
Harvesting Of Worm-Cast
After (2-3) months, we get very loose, fragile, highly nutritious, earth sainted, crushed tea leaf like fine textured Vermicompost.
There are different ways of harvesting vermicompost. The method discussed below is the easiet way of harvesting:-
After the vermicompost gets ready, we should stop giving water for somedays. Due to this the upper surface doesn’t have enough moisture. Then the earthworms went down in vermi-bag. After that we can harvest vermicompost easily.
After taking vermicompost, it should be piled up and kept in sun(Not for long time). In sunlight , remaining earthworms comes out as they are negatively photoblastic ( earthworm doesn’t like bright sunlight).
These separated earthworm should again used to make vermicompost. The vermicompost should be harvested on regular basis. In this way we can obtain highly nutritious organic vermicompost.
