1. Sandy Soil

It is a type of soil that is highly made up of sand or large particles of soil. It feels gritty and dries out so fast but it is easy to cultivate. 2. Silty Soil

This type of soil is abundant in nutrients. Its texture is soft and soapy as it holds moistures. It is a best choice for your garden if there is a water system or drainage. Using fertilizers or composted organic matter is usually necessary to maintain and improve the draining and structure while also adding nutrients. 

It is much easier to cultivate and offers a variety of benefits to the plants when the drainage is properly directed. Almost all of the vegetables and plants are suitable or can thrive in this type of soil.

Silty Soil contains more than 80% silt, less than 12% clay and less than 20% sand.

 

3. Clay Soil

Unlike other soil, this type of soil is compacted and is poor at draining. It is sticky and lumpy when it is wet and it is like a rock when dried. When spring approaches, the soil warms up and hardens making it hard to cultivate. However, if the drainage is properly placed and is enhanced, the soil will develop the necessary nutrients that are rich that can grow plants.

Clay soil contains at least 40% clay, at most 40% silt and at most 45% sand. Some characteristics of Clay Soil are:-

•Have more pore space, More Surface area

•Have more water holding capacity

•High plasticity and cohesion

•Low infiltration

 

4. Loamy Soil

It is a mixture of different geologic materials, specifically sand, silt and clay. It feels fine and damp as it is full of nutrients. It has the ideal characteristics Just like the silty soil, it can be easily cultivated and it can dry up easily during summer. However, it is an acidic soil so it needs to be mixed with organic materials.

With it being fully concentrated of nutrients, it is preferably used as a soil for potted plants or garden plants. Almost all plants can grow within this soil.

There are many subgroups of Loamy Soil which includes, Sandy loam, Sandy Clay loam, Loam, Clay Loam, Silt loam, Silty Clay loam. This types of soils contains 7-27% clay, 28-50% silt, and less than 52% sand. Some characteristics of Loamy Soil are:-

•They are nutrient rich and black in colour

•More nutrient holding capacity

•High plasticity and cohesion

•Low Infiltration

5. Peaty Soil

Just like the loamy soil, this soil is also acidic in nature. However, by the use of different organic matters, it can be a soil where abundance of growth within plants is evident. The downside of it being an acidic soil is that it slows down the process of decomposition that leads to the lack of nutrients of the soil.

If drainage is properly utilized in this soil, it will be great for plants, especially when it is mixed with organic materials. To neutralize or eliminate the acidity of the soil, you may add amendments to regulate the pH level.

6. Chalky Soil

This soil is composed of large grained stones. This soil is sometimes found on chalk and limestones. However, this soil is alkaline that can cause the leaves of a plant to be yellowish or may interfere with the growth of it. It can be resolved by regulating the pH level to the balance level and adding fertilizers for the nutrients. Also by adding hummus, the workability of the soil enhances.
