Deadheading is one the most important horticultural practices which is done mostly on flowers to get high quality output.
☑️Deadheading can be simply defined as the process of removing the old spent blooms and seed pods from flowers which ultimately increases more blooming.
Deadheading is basically a simple pruning technique which can be easily done.
Science Behind Deadheading
Actually after pollination of flowers, the flowers wilts and sends its chemical signals to the plant to slow down flowering process. Then, plants utilize the energy to develop seeds.
Deadheading interrupts the chemical signals and rejuvinate the plant and it produces more blooms.
Why Dead-heading is necessary?
When a flowers blooms, they looks beautiful. But, after certain time these flowers get old and sometimes they start making seeds. But, we plant flowers for boom beauty.
When there are dead blooms in a flower, then it will affect the size and beauty of other flowers and it can also decrease number of flowers. This is due to following reason:-
The old blooms also needs energy as they start making seeds. So, plant supply large energy to those old blooms.
✔️If we deadhead those blooms, then the energy is utilized to bear more and large flowers which make plant to aesthetically beautiful which is of course our ultimate goal.
This is main reason.
Other reasons are:-
✔️Deadheading makes plant clean and tidy.
✔️Dead-heading makes space in center of plant. So, more air flows in center and plant remains disease free.
✔️Deadheading makes flower more productive.
✔️Deadheading helps to rejuvinate the plant.
Procedure Of Deadheading In Rose
Deadheading is most important practice that is done in Rose. To keep our rose blooming again and again to keep them from being old, Deadheading is necessary.
When rose becomes old, then it start producing seeds called heps. If we don’t deadhead the rose at this stage, then flower will die when it produces seeds because producing seeds is the ultimate life goal of plant.
Now let’s talk about the deadheading in rose
Deadheading is as simple as grabbing the stem and twisting it off.
We can also use clean and sharp pruning knife to do deadheading. The pruner should be sharp cause if the cut is not sharp it may get infection and whole plant may get affected.
First choose the flower to be deadhead. Then,
We should cut the stems from the point where there are 5 leaf leaflet.
First you should look from top(flower) to down, then count the number of leaves. The numbers of leaves goes on increasing from top to bottom. When you reach to the point of 5 leaf leaflet, then you cut from that point.
The cut should be done just above the node( about half inch above node).
The reason for cutting from 5 leaves is that rose have good regenerative point at that length.
For cluster rose, then whole cluster should be removed as a single flower.
This method of deadheading is applicable to all other flowers other than rose.
This is all about deadheading in plants.
