There are many vegetables that we consume on regular basis. Parwal is one of them. It is its hindi name. Parwal is called Pointed Gourd in English. The fruit has pointed ends on both sides and is thick in middle which is green in colour with white strips. It is known by different names in different part of the world, like Parval in Nepal, Kambupudalai is Tamil name. The scientific name is Trichosanthes dioica. It is native to India.
Parwal belongs to cucurbitacae family. Unlike other members of Cucurbitacae family, It is perennial. It is a climber/vine that can reach up to 6 meter in height. As it is a gourd in cucurbitacae family, Commercial growers apply 3g cutting technique to increase the harvest.
It is a nutritional rich vegetable. It contains vitamins A and C, magnesium, copper, fiber, vitamin B2, calcium, iron, sulfur, and potassium in abundant amount. It is good for our skin, digestion and heart. Therefore, One should try to consume it atleast once a week.
It can be easily grown in kitchen garden. Parwal is propagated by using seeds or by stem cutting. If you wish to grow it on Pot like growing tomatoes at home, Then – (16-20) inch pot with proper drainage is suitable. Sandy loam soil with organic manure is good growing medium. The soil should be moist but not soggy. As it is vine, Trellis should be made for its support.
