Shevanti flower is a perennial herb that is grown all around the globe for its floral beauty. The english name of this flower, Chrysanthemum is derived from two Greek words namely:- “chrysos” meaning golden or yellow and “anthemom” meaning flower. So – It is also known by its another unique but catchy name “Yellow Glory”.

If we talk about the origin and distribution of the Shevanti flower, It is known to be originated from China from where it is then transferred to Asia, Europe and America. The cultivation of the flower gains popularity in the 19th century.

One of the main reason for its popularity is, It can be used as both cut flower and loose flower. As a cut flower it used as decorative art and as a loose flower, it is used in garlands and focus flowers in the bouquet.

This flower has gained special respect in Japanese culture as they celebrate Chrysanthemum day on 9th September every year.

The reason for calling the flower as “Autumn Queen” is – it blooms in autumn while all the other plants are dropping their leaves. This flower is a unique creation of Nature.

Types Of Shevanti Flower

According to the size of the flowers and growing methods, Shevanti flower is classified into two major types which are explained below:-

1. Standard Type

In Standard type, the main stem bear branch on which a  single but large bloom occurs. They are more long and sturdy. They are mainly used as a cut flower in flower arrangement due to their long keeping quality.

Some examples of Standard type flower are:- Snowball, City beauty, Sweet heart, Sun flight.

2. Spray Type

In Spray type, the main stem bear branch which further generates several smaller branches on which many smaller but large number of flowers blooms. They are of bush type. They are mainly used as a loose flower.

Some examples of Spray type flower are:- Hurricane, Jublilee, Laura, Red star, Arctic.

Growing Methods

We can grow Shevanti flower plant in our home by 3 different methods. These methods are explained below:-

1. By Suckers

In this method, the main stem of the flower is cut down a little above the ground level. This ends the apical dominance and there occurs the growth of lateral buds. Later, these later buds grow into branches with roots at the base. These branches having roots are called Suckers. The suckers thus formed are separated from the mother plant and are planted directly into the field, flower beds and pots. Suckers should be planted in the rainy season maintaining a distance of (30×30) cm.

2. Terminal Cuttings

The cutting from the tip part of the main stem and side branches of the flower is called terminal cutting. The length of the terminal cutting should be about 5 cm. The cuttings are dipped into the rooting hormone and are planted in beds in semi-shade condition. Later, these terminal cuttings grow into the whole plant and start to bloom.

3. From Shevanti Flower Seeds

Growing this flower from seed takes time and is good to produce new cultivars. Blooms are collected when they dry completely. Then, The seeds are taken out of bloom. Now – the seeds are sown and sprinkle water is applied and after a week seedlings appear from which we can grow a new plant

The flowering starts from mid-september to December, during which the days are shorter and nights are longer.

Care And Management 

With proper care and management, we can grow our this flower to its optimum potential. If we lack the knowledge of its proper care and management, the plant may die. 

We have mentioned all the necessary conditions to grow this beautiful Shevanti flower below:-

1. Soil

Deep friable sandy loam soil with pH (5.5-6.5) is considered best to grow the flower. This flower is very sensitive to water lodging condition. Therefore, there should be made proper provision of drainage whether we grow Shevanti in a flower bed or pot.

2. Light

Shevanti Flower is a short-day plant. During autumn, the length of days reduces which induces the flowering of this plant. Light directly affects vegetative growth by influencing the number and rate of leaf production, stem length and morphology of leaf. 

The photoperiod of about (13-14) hrs is necessary for the good growth and development of the  flower.

3.Temperature

The best temperature for its normal growth and development is (15-20) °C. In a very hot summer, we should keep it in shade and in a very cold winter we can grow it inside a greenhouse.

4. Irrigation And Humidity

The frequency of irrigation for Shevanti flower depends on the growth stage, soil and weather condition. We should give more water during summer and vegetative growth. The frequency of irrigation should be reduced during the flowering and rainy season. The humidity of (70-90)% is best.

5. Pinching

Pinching is the process of removal or trimming of the growing tip of the Shevanti which reduces apical dominance and promotes the side branches growth of the flower. 

In the Standard type of Shevanti, 3 pinchings are done. First in July, second in August and third in September.

In Spray type of Shevanti, only 2 pinchings are done. The first is after 4 weeks of planting and the second is after 7 weeks of planting.

6. Disbudding

Disbudding is the process of removal of undesirable buds of flower plant which helps to produce a large number of small flowers or small number of large flower.

In Standard type, Terminal bud is retained and all the axillary buds are removed.

In Spray type, Large apical bud is removed and axillary buds are allowed to grow.

7. Staking

Staking is the method of providing support to growing Shevanti flower. It is done by the help of wires and stakes.

Growing Of Chrysanthemum In Pot

We love to grow our flowers in pot and care them like a pet. For this type of amenity horticulturist, Chrysanthemum flower is perfect choice as it can be grown easily inside pots with minimum care. We can use both earthern pots or plastic pots according to the choice. Then, we should make pot mixture as follows:-

Pot Mixture For Shevanti flower=

1Part Sand+1Part Leaf Mould+1Part Well Rotten FYM. 

We can propagate Shevanti in pot by both seeds and terminal cuttings maintaining the spacing of (10×10) cm.
